Dog Days Out: Walking Trails and Pub Stops in Bourton-on-the-Water
Now that walking weather has arrived, it’s the perfect time to get out and explore the countryside around Bourton-on-the-Water–with the dog in tow.
One of our favourite local routes is the walk from Bourton to Lower Slaughter. It’s just 1.5 miles one way and follows part of the Warden’s Way, starting at the war memorial in the village centre. From there, you’ll pass St Lawrence Church and head out across open fields and quiet lanes. It’s an easy route with postcard views and plenty of space for a curious dog to stretch their legs.
If you’re after something longer, the circular walk that takes in both Lower and Upper Slaughter is a great option. At 5.4 miles, it’s still manageable but offers a bit more variety–following the River Windrush west out of Bourton before looping back via rolling farmland and peaceful footpaths. You’ll join part of the Windrush Way, and there are plenty of spots along the route to stop, take in the view.
Whichever route you choose, we think a good walk deserves a proper reward. Back at The Mousetrap, we’ve got you covered with seasonal food, cold drinks, and a relaxed spot in the garden or bar to unwind. We’re proudly dog-friendly, with water bowls at the ready and a few treats behind the bar for our four-legged visitors. And if all that walking has really taken it out of you, you’ll be pleased to hear that we also have dog-friendly rooms – so you and your pup can both put your feet (and paws) up in comfort.
So if you’re planning a day out in the Cotswolds, make us part of your route. Good walks, good food, and a warm welcome–whatever the weather brings.
